What Did the Groom Say?

Updated October 2026

What Did the Groom Say is the bachelorette game where the groom does the homework. He answers a list of questions about the bride ahead of time, usually on video, and at the party she guesses what he said.

The 116 questions here go a little off the usual path. Think of it as a roast where the groom keeps accidentally giving a toast. The room teases her for a while, then he says something sweet and ruins it for everyone.

Below: how to run it, how to film him so the answers land, and a free generator that pulls your list from 116 questions, sorted from wholesome to regrettable.

How to play

  1. Pick 15 to 20 questions. Any more and the room starts checking their phones.
  2. Interview him a week or two before. Video is best, because his face when he hears “How much of the bed is hers, as a percentage?” is half the game. Film one clip per question so you can play them one at a time.
  3. At the party, ask her first. She answers out loud, then click to his answer.
  4. Keep score however the room likes. A point for every match is the classic.
  5. Save a sweet one for last. The room will have been laughing at her for twenty minutes, and he gets to fix it.

Filming the groom

  • Ask the best man, a sibling or whoever he won’t perform for. Not the bride, obviously.
  • Film in one sitting, phone held sideways, somewhere quiet.
  • Tell him short answers are fine and a little teasing is expected. If every answer is straight, it’s a long night. Don’t show him the questions first. Read them to him cold, on camera, and keep his first answer.
  • If he won’t do video, read him the questions and write down what he says, word for word. The host reads his answers out during the game.
  • Name each clip with its number so it’s easy to drop into the slides.

Make your list

Tell us how far the questions can go and how many you want, and we’ll pull a list from all 116. Swap out any you don’t like, then print it for whoever is filming him, or take it to the TV as slides.

Want the whole room in on it?

In Group Project’s Reference Check, her partner answers questions about her in secret before the party. On the night, everyone else writes their own answer to the same question, his real one hides among them, and she has to pick out what he actually said. The room votes for its favorite, and then the TV reveals who wrote what.

“The bride loved it. The guests had a blast.”

Questions

How many questions should we ask?

Fifteen to 20. That’s about half an hour with clips, which is as long as a room will watch someone else’s fiancé on a phone.

Can we play without a video?

Yes. Read him the questions, write down what he says, and the host reads his answers out one at a time during the game.

What if there’s no groom?

It works the same with any partner. Call it What Did She Say, or What Did They Say, and use the same questions.

What’s the difference between this and Who Knows the Bride?

In Who Knows the Bride, the bride answers and the guests guess. Here, the groom answers and the bride guesses. Our Who Knows the Bride page has 230 questions for that one.

Is this a roast?

A mild one. Most of the questions tease her, a few are there to make her cry, and the generator mixes both.

Is this the same as the Newlywed Game?

Close. The Newlywed Game puts both of them on the spot at once. This one only puts her on the spot, which is the point. The shower version, where both of them answer and the guests guess, is He Said, She Said, and we have 73 bridal shower questions for it.
